Gabe didnât remember much about exiting the hotel. He recalled Averyâs violent cursing and couldnât help but find it amusing. Someone approached her in the parking garage, and she threatened to sic her dog on the man if he took another step. The guy simply wanted directions.
Just a bit of overreaction on Averyâs part.
Besides, the dog couldnât move, let alone take a bite out of someone.
Averyâs constant muttering grounded him. If he focused on her angry words mixed in with her pleas for him to live, the pain seemed somewhat bearable.
âOkay, Gabe. Here we go. You know my magic sucks, so youâd better keep still, or I may drop you.â
Oh, shit.
What the hell did that mean?
He opened his eyes to find himself floating out of the putrid laundry bin. And he thought his pack smelled after a few days out in the woodsâ¦
His fight or flight instinct took over, and for a second, his muscles tensed. He considered trying to get out of her magical hold. Instead, he took a deep breath and gave himself over to the process.
The power Avery used set every nerve-ending on fire. It didnât hurt in the least but resembled more of a low electric current or small bursts of energy sizzling through him. Thankfully, heâd grown up with a Fae mother, so he recognized the sensations magic could produce. But it had also been bred into him to escape it, and Gabe fought the urge with everything in him.
As he rose from the bin, he met her stare. Her eyes had narrowed, and her tongue stuck out the corner of her mouth as if she was in deep concentration. She stretched her arms in front of her.
He glanced around and finally understood her intentions. She was going to move him up and out of the laundry bin and into the front seat of the truck.
Great plan. Heâd never get there by himself.
As her magic lowered him to the seat with his rear end to the door, he relaxed. Thankfully, her plan had worked.
âWhereâre the keys to this damned gas guzzler?â she asked. Gabe lifted his head. She glared at him with hands on her hips, her cheeks tinged pink.
His gaze traveled from her over to the forgotten laundry cart. With a furrowed brow, she followed his stare.
âRight,â she said, turning away from him. âI dumped your clothes in here. Iâm full of all this anxiety, and I canât think straight. I hate it when I feel like this. My mind gets so jumbledâ¦â
He laid his head down as she continued to mutter to herself. A moment later, she slammed the passenger door and crawled into the driverâs seat.
âThis should be interesting,â she said as she fiddled with the seat settings. âI can barely reach the pedals.â
One of Gabeâs pet peeves happened to be people driving his truck. It wasnât that he didnât trust others; he just hated when his mirrors and seats were moved. It seemed to take him a while to get them returned to the original position.
